Swirls: New Work
Designing Swirl WIPI’m almost done with the #LoveIsLove Pi Shawl, and I have a commission on the way, but it’s not going to come in for a few more weeks. I need something to knit. We have a car trip this weekend, and a convention, and I have about an hour or three left on #LoveIsLove, and that’s not enough. I need something to knit. I had a spin through the Pittsboro resale stores today. On my pass through the PTA thrift shop, I found 3 cones of 8/2 rayon in a soft gray color. It’s fine and a little shiny, and...
#LIL, Ring 9, completed
#LIL LoveisLoveThe last rows of Ring 9 and the beginning of the last feather and fan got me through the election. I was the handler for a candidate; we spent Tuesday driving from precinct to precinct, meeting voters. He drove; I knit. (The shawl is big enough, and baggy enough, that it holds the ball of yarn inside itself, so I could stand at the polling places, tuck the bag under one arm, and continue to knit while we chatted with poll greeters and the occasional voter.) Very low turnout on election day because in our counties, 70% of the people...
Bohemian Home, Part 3: Naked Man & the Goldfish
bohemian color mirror sculptureNaked Man came to us from A&B Store Fixtures in Raleigh, a wonderful place to wander from time to time. (The Greensboro warehouses have more stock, but are overwhelming.) He is styrofoam and was the only one of his kind (they have virtual armies of real mannikens). I've never seen another one like him. When he arrived, he was dirty white, so I painted him flat white and pretended he looked like a Greek torso carved from marble. In dim light, it worked. We found the Goldfish at a gift store in Port Arthur, WA, just before the recession. It...
Bohemian Home, Part 2: Rainbow Books
bohemian book storage colorI once wrote a personal ad that said, "If you don't own 2X your age in shelf-feet of books, you may not be comfortable in my home." I wondered about sorting books by color for a long time. I had most of my books roughly arranged by subject matter, and I could usually find what I thought I had. But I hated the random blotches of color. Books are a huge part of my home, and I like my color, and the books on the shelf were not doing their part. Finally, I decided to try sorting books by color. ...
Bohemian Home, Part 1
bohemian mirrorI bought Justina Blakeney's book, The New Bohemians, the other day. I follow her on Pinterest. I get it that my art fits well in a Bohemian decor. What I had not realized until halfway through the book was that my own decorating style earns the "bohemian interiors" label. Ergo, a series of posts sharing bits and pieces (mostly, as quickly as I can get everything tidied up for photography) of the home that inspires the art you see in this store. Here, the Lily Mirror: I found this mirror at a Habitat Restore. It was intended to be a...
